Six Characters in Search of an Author ,హెన్రీ-IV ఈ రెండు నాటకాల్లోనూ ప్రధాన పాత్రలు గతాన్ని వర్ణించే ప్రయత్నం చేస్తాయి.

ఈవిధంగా మనిషి తన గుర్తింపునీ, అస్తిత్వాన్నీ కనుగొనడానికి సహాయపడే శాస్త్రమైన కార్ల్ యుంగ్ మానసిక విశ్లేషణల్ని 'Six Characters in Search of an Author' ,'హెన్రీ -IV', 'The Late Mattia Pascal' వంటి రచనల ద్వారా పిరాండెల్లో తన కాల్పనిక ప్రపంచాలకు అన్వయించడాన్ని చూస్తాం.

The Loser - Thomas Bernhard

“The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion.” Nestbeschmutzer [ person who fouls their own nest ] గా అభివర్ణించబడినా స్వదేశానికి ఆవల మాత్రం కుండబద్దలుకొట్టినట్లుండే ఆయన రచనల శైలికి గాను యావత్ సాహితీ ప్రపంచపు మన్ననలందుకున్నారంటారు.

The whole time on my way to the teacher’s I kept on saying these three words: Absolutely no artist! Absolutely no artist! Absolutely no artist! If I hadn’t met Glenn Gould, I probably wouldn’t have given up the piano and I would have become a piano virtuoso and perhaps even one of the best piano virtuosos in the world, I thought in the inn. When we meet the very best, we have to give up, I thought.

కథ మొదట్లోనే నేరేటర్ గ్లెన్ ను పరిచయం చేస్తూ, he was so possessed by his art that we had to assume he couldn’t continue in that state for very long and would soon die returning to Canada from Salzburg, destroy himself with his music obsession, with his piano radicalism.

We never attained the inhuman state that Glenn attained, who by the way never escaped this inhuman state, who didn’t even want to escape this inhuman state.

From the first moment ours was a spiritual friendship. The majority of even the most famous piano players haven’t a clue about their art, he said. But it’s like that in all the arts, I said, just like that in painting, in literature, I said, even philosophers are ignorant of philosophy. Most artists are ignorant of their art. They have a dilettante’s notion of art, remain stuck all their lives in dilettantism, even the most famous artists in the world.

"To exist means nothing other than we despair" అనే Wertheimer ఫిర్యాదులు కొన్ని చోట్ల అదుపు తప్పి అసలు మనిషి పుట్టడమే తప్పన్నట్లు మొత్తం మనవాళిపై వెళ్ళగక్కే విద్వేషంలా అనిపిస్తాయి.

“Battle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster, and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.”

During his lifetime Thomas Bernhard’s texts provoked more than the ordinary share of scandals. But perhaps the most enduring scandal will turn out to be his very last text, his will: “Whatever I have written, whether published by me during my lifetime or as part of my literary papers still existing after my death, shall not be performed, printed or even recited for the duration of legal copyright within the borders of Austria, however this state identifies itself.” Bernhard had taken care not to reveal the contents of this will before he died; in fact, he even stipulated that news of his death not be announced until he was buried. This parting slap in the face of his native country thus came not only as a surprise; it came from the hand of a dead man, whose laughter rang out from the grave.

He had barricaded himself in his house. For life. All our lives the three of us have shared the desire to barricade ourselves from the world. All three of us were born barricade fanatics. But Glenn had carried his barricade fanaticism furthest.

Glenn confirmed what we sensed: New York is the only city in the world where a thinking person can breathe freely the minute he sets foot in it.

Immediately I quashed that idea, for I detested virtuosity and its attendant features from the very beginning, I detested above all appearing before the populace, I absolutely detested the applause, I couldn’t stand it, for years I didn’t know, is it the bad air in concert halls or the applause I can’t stand, or both, until I realized that I couldn’t stand virtuosity per se and especially not piano virtuosity. For I absolutely detested the public and everything that had to do with this public and therefore I detested the virtuoso (and virtuosos) personally as well.

Our loser is a fanatic, Glenn once said, he’s practically choking on self-pity all the time.

I had nothing to prove, only everything to lose, he said, I thought. Our wealth was probably our undoing, he said, but then immediately: Glenn’s wealth didn’t kill him, it allowed him to exploit his genius.

For fifty years are absolutely enough, I thought. We become contemptible when we go past fifty and are still living, continue our existence. We’re border-crossing weaklings, I thought, who have made ourselves twice as pitiful by putting fifty years behind us. Now I’m the shameless one, I thought. I envied the dead. For a moment I hated them for their superiority.

But we don’t always have to be studying something, I thought, it’s perfectly enough merely to think, to do nothing but think and give our thoughts free rein. To give in to our philosophical worldview, simply submit to our philosophical worldview, but that’s the hardest thing, I thought.

But simple people don’t understand complicated ones and thrust the latter back on themselves, more ruthlessly than any others, I thought. The biggest mistake is to think that one can be rescued by so-called simple people. A person goes to them in an extremely needy condition and begs desperately to be rescued and they thrust this person even more deeply into his own despair. And how are they supposed to save the extravagant one in his extravagance, I thought.

If a friend dies we nail him to his own sayings, his comments, kill him with his own weapons. On the one hand he lives on in what he said to us (and to others) all his life, on the other we kill him with it. We’re the most ruthless (toward him!) as far as his comments, his writings, are concerned, I thought, if we don’t have any more of his writings, because he prudently destroyed them, we go after his comments in order to destroy him, I thought. We exploit his unpublished papers in order to destroy even more the one who left them to us, to make the dead man even deader, and if he hasn’t left us the appropriate instructions to destroy his papers, we invent them, simply invent declarations against him, etc., I thought. Heirs are cruel, the survivors don’t have the slightest consideration, I thought. We’re searching for testimony against him, for us, I thought. We plunder everything that can be used against him in order to improve our situation, I thought, that’s the truth.

The so-called intellectual consumes himself in what he considers pathbreaking work and in the end has only succeeded in making himself ridiculous, whether he’s called Schopenhauer or Nietzsche, it doesn’t matter, even if he was Kleist or Voltaire we still see a pitiful being who has misused his head and finally driven himself into nonsense. Who’s been rolled over and passed over by history. We’ve locked up the great thinkers in our bookcases, from which they keep staring at us, sentenced to eternal ridicule, he said, I thought.

How good it is that none of these imperfect, incomplete works has ever appeared, I thought, had I published them, which would have posed no difficulty whatsoever, today I would be the unhappiest person imaginable, confronted daily with disastrous works crying out with errors, imprecision, carelessness, amateurishness. I avoided this punishment by destroying them, I thought, and suddenly I took great pleasure in the word destroying.

Everything about Wertheimer was always taken from somebody else, copied, he took everything from me, he copied me in everything, and so he even took my failure from me and copied it. Only his suicide was his own decision and came completely from him, I thought, and so he may have experienced, as they say, a sense of triumph in the end.

The lower classes are just as much a public menace as the upper classes, he said, they commit the same hideous acts, should be rejected just as categorically as the others, they’re different but they’re equally hideous, he said, I thought.

Wertheimer was an unrelieved emulator, he emulated anybody he thought was better off than he was, although he didn’t have the capacity for that, as I now see, I thought, he’d absolutely wanted to be an artist and thus walked into the mouth of disaster.

We say a word and destroy a person, although the person we’ve destroyed, at the moment we say out loud the word that destroys him, doesn’t take notice of this deadly fact, I thought.

An Evening with Susan Sontag

 An Evening with Susan :

* Not only must I summon the courage to be a bad writer - I must dare to be truly unhappy. Desperate. And not save myself, short-circuit the despair.

By refusing to be as unhappy as I truly am, I deprive myself of subjects. I’ve nothing to write about. Every topic burns. (6/19/76,NY) ( Is she trying to prove that all writers are unhappy ? )

* TB : Consumed (dissolved) by passion - passion leads to dissolution of the body. It was tuberculosis but they called it 'Love'. (Sigh !)

* Beckett found a new subject for the drama :- What am I going to do in the next second ? Weep, take out of my comb, sigh , sit, be silent, tell a joke, die. (He he he)

*Poets self-limited by some actual or mental regionalism, deliberately cultivated - so he / she will be seen to have [created ] his / her "universe".

Weakness of American poetry- It's anti-intellectual. Great poetry has ideas. ( You are hurting the egos of Eliot clan Susan )

Reflections in a Golden Eye - Carson McCullers

"Reflections in a Golden Eye" కథ విషయానికొస్తే, ఇది చాలా సాధారణమైన కథే.

ఆమె ఈ కథను రాసినప్పుడు, "I am so immersed in my characters that their motives are my own. When I write about a thief, I become one; when I write about Captain Penderton, I become a homosexual man. I become the characters I write about and I bless the Latin poet Terence who said 'Nothing human is alien to me."

అయినప్పటికీ సామజిక చట్రంలో ఇమిడే క్రమంలో, "He carried his cuckoldry with a cynical good grace that was respected on the post." అదే సమయంలో లియోనారాను మనకు పరిచయం చేస్తూ క్లుప్తంగా రెండే వాక్యాల్లో, "Leonora Penderton feared neither man, beast, nor the devil; God she had never known."

When she married the Captain she had been a virgin. Four nights after her wedding she was still a virgin, and on the fifth night her status was changed only enough to leave her somewhat puzzled. As for the rest it would be hard to say. She herself would probably have reckoned her affairs according to a system of her own giving the old Colonel at Leavenworth only half a count and the young Lieutenant in Hawaii several units in her calculations. But now for the past two years there had been only Major Morris Langdon and no one else. With him she was content.

He never thought of her in connection with the stables or the open air. To him she was always in the room where he had watched her in the night with such absorption. His memory of these times was wholly sensual. There was the thick rug beneath his feet, the silk spread, the faint scent of perfume. There was the soft luxurious warmth of woman flesh, the quiet darkness the alien sweetness in his heart and the tense power in his body as he crouched there near to her. Once having known this he could not let it go; in him was engendered a dark, drugged craving as certain of fulfillment as death.

"It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society" అని జిడ్డు కృష్ణ మూర్తి అన్నట్లు, కుల్లర్స్ తన జీవిత కాలమంతా సాంఘిక నియమాలకు తలవంచని తెగింపుతో, తన జెండర్ పరిమితులను సవాలు చేస్తూ  బ్రతికారంటారు.

He spoke and wrote three languages gracefully. He knew something of astronomy and had read much poetry. But in spite of his knowledge of many separate facts, the Captain never in his life had had an idea in his head. For the formation of an idea involves the fusion of two or more known facts. And this the Captain had not the courage to do.

On the post Leonora Penderton enjoyed a reputation as a good hostess, an excellent sportswoman, and even as a great lady. However, there was something about her that puzzled her friends and acquaintances. They sensed an element in her personality that they could not quite put their fingers on. The truth of the matter was that she was a little feebleminded.

This sad fact did not reveal itself at parties, or in the stables, or at her dinner table. There were only three persons who understood this: her old father, the General, who had worried no little about it until she was safely married; her husband, who looked on it as a condition natural to all women under forty; and Major Morris Langdon, who loved her for it all the more.

He tried, and succeeded, in looking on her obvious unhappiness as something morbid and female, altogether outside his control.

Then she had burst into tears. That was the sort of thing the Major meant by 'female' and 'morbid'; and it did a man no good to try to figure it all out.

And Lord! when they were scrambling around those bushes together filling his hat with berries, it had first happened. At nine in the morning and two hours after they met! Even now he could hardly believe it. But what had it seemed like to him at the time? Oh, yes it was like being out on maneuvers, shivering all through a cold rainy night in a tent that leaked. And then to get up at dawn and see that the rain was over and the sun was out again. And to watch the fine looking soldiers making coffee over camp fires and see the sparks rise up into a clear white sky. A wonderful feeling the best in the world!

There are times when a man's greatest need is to have someone to love, some focal point for his diffused emotions. Also there are times when the irritations, disappointments, and fears of life, restless as spermatozoids, must be released in hate. The unhappy Captain had no one to hate and for the past months he had been miserable.

The mind is like a richly woven tapestry in which the colors are distilled from the experiences of the senses, and the design drawn from the convolutions of the intellect The mind of Private Williams was imbued with various colors of strange tones, but it was without delineation, void of form.

He thought of the soldier in terms neither of love nor hate; he was conscious only of the irresistible yearning to break down the barrier between them. When from a distance he saw the soldier resting before the barracks, he wanted to shout to him, or to strike him with his fist, to make him respond in some way to violence.

ఈ ఏడాది సాహిత్యంలో నోబెల్ బహుమతి గ్రహీత అన్నే ఎర్నాక్స్ పుస్తకాలు  రెండేళ్ళ క్రితం చదివాను, వాటిల్లో "The Years", "I Remain in Darkness" రెండూ తీవ్రంగా నిరాశచెంది సగంలో వదిలేసినవే.

Fragments of an Infinite Memory: My Life with the Internet - Maël Renouard

Bruce Benderson "the end of imagination achieved by the victory of imagination" గా అభివర్ణించినట్లు దీనివల్ల మానవజాతి కోల్పోయిందే ఎక్కువనిపిస్తుంది. Maël Renouard.

Who hasn’t gone on the internet looking for past loves and friends not seen for years? Time lost in search of lost time.

We will do a Google search exactly as we go looking through our memories, by a simple act of the mind which, like memory, will require neither the hand nor the eye as intermediary. We will use this inner Google to look up words and phrases in a foreign language. We will know the name of the tree, the history of the public monument, the biography of Casimir Delavigne, as soon as our sight data is recorded and processed. And this is not all, by any means. Each thing will deploy itself beneath our gaze in its monadic singularity, that is, in the infinity of its nature, its history, its relations to the entire world. The memory of which our brain is the organ will no longer be an individual memory.

We can live in many worlds, in many languages. There is an internet Pentecost that makes us speak in tongues and will soon cast aside, among other terrors of the past, the dystopia of a world dominated by Anglophone monolingualism.

“Basically, if I had to sum up my Facebook experience, I’d say it’s the continuous revelation of the idiocy of intelligent people. For a long time, I found it hard to believe what I took to be a nasty myth. But the scales have fallen from my eyes. All I have to do is log in, and the horrific certainty forces itself upon me again, with ever more crushing strength. This spectacle fascinates and terrifies me at the same time; I can watch it for hours, silently and invisibly; by the end, I find myself plunged into an emptiness from which I can hardly rise.”

This way of doing things would be too contrary to the material’s inner tendency: the internet abhors a nonentity and hungers for exhibition; exhibition is the element in which the internet burns the victims upon which it feeds each day. The simplest thing to do is to follow this tendency by leaving one’s prey a prisoner to the web; for the difficult thing today isn’t to become known but rather to be forgotten.

Too often, I’ve resorted to Proust’s lovely excuse in his letter to Madame de Caillavet, whose husband had fallen in battle: ‘I’ve thought so much about that daughter of whom he was so proud, your dear Mademoiselle Simone, that I don’t even know anymore if I actually wrote to her, so many times have I written her in thought.’ The time has come for the inner, post-digital internet to deliver us from this gap between thought and act, mind and hand—one of the last vestigial features that still bind us to the tragedy of our original condition. The time has come for us to be able to write and send messages within our mind, without having to write them down on a physical device, with the help of our fingers.”

Before, I used to know in the blink of an eye where to find any one of my innumerable books; now it’s much more difficult, just as my relation to all things I’m not connected to on the internet has become more difficult. On Google, I can’t ask where I put my keys; I can’t act upon them. I can’t summon my books to my side. More and more actions are accomplished entirely on the internet; those that still require physical action have become strange and nearly impossible. If someone asks me to fill out forms and send them by mail, I become disoriented. It isn’t familiar to me anymore.

“I believe,” says Jacques Derrida in Ghost Dance, “that the future belongs to ghosts, and that modern technologies, of images, cinematography, telecommunications, etc., augment the power of ghosts.”

Lodge’s world is still an exhausting world. A world in which it is possible to run in vain. A world in which a person can disappear forever. A world in which you always have to hope for the grace of coincidences. Lodge multiplies such coincidences wittingly and abundantly. They are part of a network of allusions that link his novel to traditional narrative forms, at times picaresque, at times Arthurian. The world of literature itself turns out to be a small world, a world of winks between old friends.

Deleuze was struck by how Bergson said in Matter and Memory that we plunge into the virtual past in order to find our memories there and bring them to the surface of consciousness, as upon the surface of the ocean. The internet has given an outward form to this process. One day, it will return to the inwardness from which it came.

Proust established a clear distinction between voluntary and involuntary memory, a distinction which is partly demolished by our wanderings on the internet, the way they unfold in the recollection machine. On the internet, acts of voluntary memory often reach further than their initial goal, and it isn’t unusual for them to confront us by chance, unexpectedly, with buried swaths of our past existence; epiphanies of involuntary memory draw the digital wanderer into new searches, where he seeks—voluntarily, now—to get his hands on another dose of the ecstatic recollection that so intensely transported him the first time.

Each of our five senses opens onto a realm as vast as the world; its limits are the limits of the world. The internet is the world, but it is not only the world (just as the world is not only images, smells, or sounds). The internet becoming an organ of sense is inscribed in its idea.

Interiority is no longer master in its own house. The world has broken in and crowded it out. In the past, I only used to be able to concentrate at home, in silence and solitude. That’s exactly what I have to get away from now if I want to have any hope of putting the hours of a day to good use; otherwise, I look up everything that crosses my mind on the internet; the brief distractions that normally punctuate a sustained effort take on outsize proportions; time slips through my fingers, and I watch myself waste the hours as I take long puffs of this opium. Physical space—definitely less teeming—is where I take refuge to regain my faculty for concentration. On a café terrace, the sound of motors, the merry-go-round of passersby, and even the neighboring conversations and the background music that used to irritate me, all these simple monotonous, regular, predictable things have become far more solid anchors for my attention than the solitude of an office or a room in which I know the infinite lies in reach of my laziness, musings, or lack of willpower.

Spiritualism: I believe that matter is an aspect of mind; that mind is the future of matter; that matter will not hold out against its complete manipulation by mind. Or to put it otherwise: matter and mind are one and the same, but this unity realizes and reveals itself through time.

Techno-spiritualism: Mind is not ethereal; it does not move upon the waters. It exists only in those devices that trace at once the actuality of its limits and the potential of its unlimited expansion. The internet is not the mind, but it is “of” the mind. This spiritualism is not a humanism propped upon the current state of our biological being.

Google Earth and Facebook have rung in the revenge of simple hearts who believe in real presence. The internet has vindicated the faith of the ignorant who imagine that knowledge is integral—that to know, is to know everything

The quantitative evaluation of academic talent, become obsessive, encourages publications that merely serve to add a line to a résumé and that no one reads. Who, for that matter, could read them without wasting a life? Textual inflation is now close to exceeding the cognitive capacities of a human life span.

Jacques Derrida, 1967 లో గ్రమటాలజీ అనే రచనలో “the end of the book” గురించి మాట్లాడినప్పుడు మున్ముందు జరగబోయే ఇంటర్నెట్ ఆవిర్భావం గురించి ఆయనకు తెలియదు.

The comparison also suggests that books will never completely vanish, just as horses are still around, in equestrian clubs, where they are objects of aesthetic worship and enjoy a level of care whose technical precision verges upon a science. Books will undoubtedly meet with a similar fate, their sphere of existence limited and reserved—with all the advantages this entails—to leisure and art. They will also find themselves in the company of sailboats.

Debord spoke of the diffuse spectacle (liberal democratic) and the concentrated spectacle (Soviet). Perhaps we should invent the category of the esoteric spectacle (digital) in which life hands itself the mirror of a false reconciliation.

I had the feeling of truly understanding what it means to be able to immediately “share” with “friends” the photographs of the places in which we find ourselves. The contradiction between solitude, as a condition of aesthetic experience, and communication, as the intimate aim of this experience, was suddenly resolved with an efficacy that, a few years earlier, would have seemed unimaginable. I looked at my camera; I nearly pushed the “share” button, as if this had become an obvious, natural, even necessary gesture; and I held back my finger.
