Evenings with Idries Shah - Idries Shah

Caravan of Dreams, Reflections, Wisdom of the Idiots

As a wise man once said: ‘If anyone delights in mud, clear water will not attract him.’

--------------------------------------------------------

People who believe that they will find something in a thing will tend to find it: and this includes such things as contentment with a system. People, on the other hand, who have something missing (or not yet found) in themselves and exteriorize this sense are looking for imperfection even in something they are studying. They will bring this sense of lack to the subject in question, and will attribute this sense of something missing to the materials, the people, the system. In more recent years  – say the past forty or ffty – there has been a growing understanding of this syndrome, while it is not uncommon to read in former times of people who were obviously misfits drifting from one thing to another and calling everyone and everything else a misfit, or incomplete. Yet Rumi, for instance, clearly says 700 years ago: ‘The lack is in you, fortunate one, and not in It or Them…’

----------------------------------------------------------

Q: There is a craze to call oneself a Sufi, in the West. At the same time, there are many reputable people in Europe and America who are connected with the Sufis. How can we make sure that the craze does not spoil the name and work of the Sufis?

A: From time to time, there is a craze for almost everything somewhere. The craze dies out, and people do not in any case usually assume that oddities are truly representative of the thing itself. For instance, there is a vegetarian craze, but this does not give vegetables a bad name: it only means that some people are more or less obsessed by vegetables. The craze for pornographic films does not endanger films, and so on.

The best safeguard is for normal people to treat the craze  – and the crazies – in the way which they deserve.

This is easy for us, since the Sufis and Sufism have a reputable ancestry and many normal adherents.

Your anxiety may perhaps be allayed by looking at a story which reports something which happened recently.

At a diplomatic reception in Bonn, a woman waitress spilt a tray of drinks over a distinguished Middle Eastern ambassador, who happens to be a Sufi.

She said: ‘Do forgive me. You see, I am a Suf. I am not a waitress!’ The diplomat looked at her and answered: ‘You thought that you were a Sufi and not a waitress. Well, you may be assured that not only are you not a Sufi, but you really are a waitress!’

------------------------------------------------------------

‘God will forgive the breaking of a fast; but how can one compensate a man for breaking his heart?’

In the eyes of the Sufi, a sin against a man, which may include distressing him, is also a ‘sin against God’.

Sounds, Feelings, Thoughts - Wisława Szymborska

Only that which is human can be truly alien.
The rest is all mixed forests, the burrowing of moles, and wind. - Wisława Szymborska.

After so many eras of not being here ?
For all times and tides, for all vegetations ?
For all the crustaceans, for all constellations ?
Just at this moment ? Right down to the marrow ?
Alone at my place with myself ?

I apologize to everything that I cannot be everywhere.
I apologize to everyone that I cannot be every man and woman.
I know that as long as I live nothing can justify me,
because I myself am an obstacle to myself.

Portrait of a Woman, Utopia, In Praise of My Sister, Experiment, The Museum

I am a tranquilizer.
I am effective at home,
I work well at the office,
I take exams,
I appear in court,
I carefully mend broken crockery—
all you need do is take me,
dissolve me under the tongue,
all you need do is swallow me,
just wash me down with water.
I know how to cope with misfortune,
how to endure bad news,
take the edge off injustice,
make up for the absence of God,
help pick out your widow’s weeds.
What are you waiting for—
have faith in chemistry’s compassion.
You’re still a young man/woman,
you really should settle down somehow.
Who said
life must be lived courageously?
Hand your abyss over to me—
I will line it with soft sleep,
you’ll be grateful for
the four-footed landing.
Sell me your soul.
There’s no other buyer likely to turn up.
There’s no other devil left.

Did someone have someone to love?
Did someone have someone to fight with?
Did everything happen or nothing
there or not there ?

Unexpected Meeting :

We are very polite to each other,
insist it’s nice meeting after all these years.
Our tigers drink milk.
Our hawks walk on the ground.
Our sharks drown in water.
Our wolves yawn in front of the open cage.
Our serpents have shaken off lightning,
monkeys—inspiration, peacocks—feathers.
The bats—long ago now—have flown out of our hair.
We fall silent in mid-phrase,
smiling beyond salvation.
Our people
have nothing to say.

All is mine but nothing owned,
nothing owned for memory.

Little by little staring produces twins.
Familiarity’s the very best of mothers—
favoring neither of the little cherubs,
barely remembering which is which.

For everyday purposes I believe in permanence,
in the prospects for history.

I believe in the stayed hand,
I believe in the ruined career,
I believe in the wasted labor of many years.
I believe in the secret taken to the grave.
For me these words soar above all rules.
They seek no support in examples of any kind.
My faith is strong, blind, and without foundation.

How to Start Writing (and When to Stop) : Advice for Authors - Wisława Szymborska

"Even poets with many volumes to their credit never “get used” to writing poems."

ఉదాహరణకు 'Grażyna from Starachowice' కు రాసిన లేఖలో "Let’s take the wings off and try writing on foot, shall we?”

Mr. K. K. from Bytom కు రాసిన మరో ఉత్తరంలో,  “You treat free verse as a free-for-all, But poetry (whatever we may say) is, was, and will always be a game. And as every child knows, all games have rules. So why do the grown-ups forget?”

అంటే ఇలా ఉండాలీ అంటూ, "Even boredom must be described with passion. This is an iron law of literature, which no -ism can supplant. You should start keeping a diary — we recommend this to all would-be writers. You’ll soon see how many things happen even on days when nothing seems to be happening. If you don’t find anything worth noting, no thoughts, observations, or impressions, you are left with one conclusion: you lack basic qualifications. Why not give it a try?"

Bolesław L-K. of Warsaw

Your existential woes come a little too easily. Nonstop gloom and despair quickly wear out their welcome. “Deep thought should smile,” says dear Thomas (Mann, of course). We found ourselves floundering through a shallow pond while reading Ocean. Learn to see life as a great adventure happening to you. This is our only advice for the moment.

చివరకు నోబెల్ బహుమతి స్వీకరణ ప్రసంగంలో సైతం “I’ve always had the sneaking suspicion I’m not very good at it,” అంటారు వినయంగా. నిజానికి "She was very good — but only in disguise." ఒక ప్రక్కన యువ రచయితలకు దిశానిర్దేశం చేస్తూనే, “My first poems and stories were bad too” అని తన గురించి తాను కూడా అంతే నేలమీద నిలబడి చెప్పుకోగల ఆత్మవిశ్వాసం బహు కొద్దిమందిలో మాత్రమే ఉంటుందేమో !

“What would American poets and critics do without the Central Europeans and the Russians to browbeat themselves with?” Maureen McLane exclaimed in the Chicago Tribune some years back: “Miłosz, Wisława Szymborska, Adam Zagajewski, Zbigniew Herbert, Joseph Brodsky — here we have world-historical seriousness! Weight! Importance! Even their playfulness is weighty, metaphysical, unlike barbaric American noodlings!”

The editors of the Mailbox receive threatening letters with some regularity. Such letters read more or less as follows: please let me know if my work is worth anything, if not, I’ll pack it in, bid adieu to my dreams of greatness, descend into despair, fall prey to self-doubt, break down, take to drink, cease to believe in the meaning of my own life, etcetera. The editor does not then know how to respond. Anything he says will be taken amiss. If he says the poems or stories are bad — tragedy awaits. If he says they’re good — the author fixates upon his own greatness. (This has in fact been known to happen.) Some authors, moreover, require an immediate response, since delays may occasion dire results. (Posthaste! There’s not a moment to waste.)

We request, we beg, we beseech you to pass along some legibly written manuscripts. In the meantime we keep receiving pages — worthy perhaps of dear Thomas Mann — densely covered in microscopic blots with a flourish in place of a signature. Moreover, we cannot reply in kind since the masters of the printer’s craft have yet to manufacture unintelligible fonts. When that day comes, you will get our response.

We read and read, we wade through pages black with cross-outs, and are struck by a sudden thought: why can’t we be difficult for a change? Others have leeway but we don’t? Why should we be dying to read something that, the evidence suggests, even the author didn’t want to rewrite? Of course we have our reasons. There’s always something: it’s raining, Gienia is an idiot, our knee hurts, Susie has a kitty, keeping up with the Kowalskys, no one takes us to the movies, time passes, life is boring, the world will end sooner or later. Then we hunch humbly over the text once more and try to finish reading. But really there’s no reason on earth to respond.

These graceful little poems, replete with courtly affectations, set us to daydreaming. If we had a castle, with all its appurtenances, you would be appointed court poetess. You would mourn the distress of the rose petal on which a fly has perched unbidden, and praise the way our graceful fingers brush it from the delightful blossom. Of course, any poet who immortalized twelve uncles poisoned by cabbage stew would be flung forthwith into the dungeon for his mediocrity. The oddest thing is that the poem about the rose may be a masterpiece, while the one about the uncles comes up short . . . It’s a fact, the muses are capricious and amoral. Sometimes they favor trifles. Just so long as the poet speaks in the language of his own age. Your pieces are old-fashioned in form and conceptual scope alike. This is unusual in a nineteen-year-old girl. Might you have borrowed them from your great-grandmother’s album?

Well, well. You carefully copied out extracts from the stories of Jan Stobierski and sent them to us with a request to print them as your debut. But this is minor compared to that titan of labor from Gdańsk who flawlessly reproduced a whole chapter of The Magic Mountain, changing only the characters’ names by way of disguise. It came to something like thirty pages. Your paltry four pages pale by comparison. You need to get cracking. For starters we suggest The Divine Comedy. Not bad, and it’s long.

A definition of poetry in one sentence — please. We know at least five hundred from various sources, none of which strike us as both all-embracing and pleasingly precise. Each expresses the taste of its own age. Our native scepticism saves us from attempting new definitions. But Carl Sandburg’s lovely aphorism comes to mind: “Poetry is a diary kept by a sea creature who lives on land and wishes he could fly.” Will that do for now?

Lack of literary talent is no disgrace. Many wise, noble, enlightened souls, immensely gifted in other fields, have likewise suffered. In saying that the text is second-rate, we intend no offense, we have no wish to strip the meaning from your existence. It must be admitted, though, that we do not always express our opinions with Chinese politeness. Oh, the Chinese, they really knew — at least before the Cultural Revolution — how to let less fortunate poets down. The answer would run something like this: “The honored gentleman’s poems surpass everything hitherto written and everything to be written hereafter. Were they to appear in print, all literature would pale in their dazzling light, and other practitioners of the art would painfully recognize their own insignificance . . .”

In a word, a forty-year-old shouldn’t write as if he or she were seventeen, since then neither time nor mental gifts will take up the slack.

Smooth, pleasing little poems, no complaints, but completely secondhand. They don’t contain a single phrase or image whose freshness startles us. And poetry, even when it tackles well-worn themes like the glories of spring or autumn’s sorrows, must make it seem like the first time, must make new lyric discoveries. Otherwise — hasn’t enough been written already?

You may be twenty-three, but you strike us as quite adolescent. For you a poetic debut equals topping the charts with your first single. A smash hit, a frenzied public, hordes begging for autographs, interviews, your picture in the papers: poets rarely make such conquests. Their readers don’t ordinarily roar like fans at rock concerts. The emotions stirred by literature these days are less violent, though perhaps more enduring. You see yourself surrounded by admirers, reciting poems — what poems? You have to write them first, agonizing, revising, filling wastebaskets, starting over . . . The would-be writer must see himself in humbler settings. An empty room with a piece of paper. A solitary walk. Reading someone else’s book — since one’s own aren’t the only things worth reading. Conversations of which he is not the chief subject. Of the poems you’ve sent, two are more or less intelligible. The rest is monotonous chaos

“I sigh to be a poet.” We groan to be editors at such moments.

Murder in the Age of Enlightenment: Essential Stories - Ryūnosuke Akutagawa

"It is better, I believe, to kill oneself than to endure spiritual bankruptcy"

తరువాత అకుతాగావా కథలు మరికొన్ని చదువుదామనుకున్నా వేరే పుస్తకాల ధ్యాసలోపడి కుదరలేదు, ఈలోగా పుష్కిన్ ప్రెస్ వారు  ఆయన కథల్లో కొన్నిటిని "Murder in the Age of Enlightenment: Essential Stories" పేరిట పుస్తకంగా తీసుకొచ్చారని తెలిసింది.

* జీవహింస చేయరాదు. అనగా జీవించి ఉన్న ఏ ప్రాణినీ చంపరాదు.

* నీకు ఇవ్వనిదేదీ బలవంతంగా లాక్కోరాదు, అనగా చౌర్యం చెయ్యరాదు.

* ఇంద్రియాలను దుర్వినియోగం చెయ్యరాదు. అనగా భోగలాలసత్వాన్ని అదుపులో ఉంచుకుని ఇంద్రియ నిగ్రహం పాటించాలి.

* దుర్భాషలాడరాదు.

* చిత్తమును భ్రమింపజేయు మత్తుపదార్థాలు ఉపయోగించరాదు.

ఈ కథలో ఒక పాత్ర ద్వారా, “Excel though he may in art, if a man does not remember the Five Virtues, his path can lead only to Hell.”

"Murder in the Age of Enlightenment" లో అకుతాగావా రాసిన వాటిల్లో ప్రముఖమైన ఏడు కథలున్నాయి. [In a grove, Hell screen, Murder in the age of enlightenment, The General, Madonna in black, Cogwheels]

The Spider's thread :

Stendhal, Anatole France, A Dark Night’s Passing, The Collected Letters of Prosper Mérimée

He was upstairs in a bookstore. Twenty years old at the time, he had climbed a ladder set against a bookcase and was searching for the newly-arrived Western books: Maupassant, Baudelaire, Strindberg, Ibsen, Shaw, Tolstoy, Nietzsche, Verlaine, the Goncourt brothers, Dostoevsky, Hauptmann, Flaubert …

Life is not worth a single line of Baudelaire.

After that, almost no one—at least not in the Horikawa mansion—spoke ill of Yoshihide. Perhaps this was because anyone who viewed the screen, no matter his accustomed loathing for the artist, was struck by the mysteriously solemn sentiment inspired by witnessing the mighty and wondrous tortures of Hell in all their manifest reality.

Oh, come off it. Killing a man isn’t as difficult as you people seem to think it is. At any rate, if you want to rob a man of his woman, it’s only natural that you’re going to have to kill him. Only, when I do it, I do it with a sword. People like you don’t use swords. You gentlemen kill with power, with money, sometimes with words alone—all on the pretence of doing a man a favour. True enough, no blood is shed. He might even live well. But you’ve killed him all the same. It’s hard to say whose sin is greater—yours or mine. [An ironic smile.]

Stendhal: Whenever I see a man decked in medals, I cannot help thinking how many cruelties he must have committed in order to be given such reward …

Take a look. Do you see the engraving? Desine fata deum flecti sperare precando … ‘Cease to hope that the decrees of Heaven can bend to prayer.’”

With an instinctive sense of fear, I beheld the Madonna—the very embodiment of fate. Clad in blackest ebony, she wore a look of eternal indifference, her beautiful ivory face crossed by a cruel smile tinged with malice.

“Great man”: this was the worst possible epithet anyone could have bestowed on me back then. I believed that I had committed all manner of sin, but still, whenever the opportunity arose, they went on calling me a “great man”. I couldn’t help but feel that I was somehow being mocked. By whom though? My affirmation of materialism did not allow such mysticism. Only a few months previously, I had written in a certain little niche magazine: “I have no artistic conscience; indeed, I have no conscience whatsoever. I have only nerves.”

Soon enough, I began to feel that anything and everything was a lie. Politics, industry, arts, science—all this seemed to me little more than a gaily coloured enamel concealing the true horror of human life.

“The Four Most Terrible Adversaries: Doubt, Fear, Arrogance, Lust”

As I sat there, staring at Napoleon, I thought of the works I had written. The first to drift into mind was “Words of a Dwarf” and its aphorisms—particularly the line, “Life is more hellish than Hell itself.” Then it was the fate of my artist Yoshihide, the protagonist of “Hell Screen”.

This mercurial change in attitude, from customary diffidence to sudden boldness, is one of my worse traits.

An hour later I found myself shut away in my room, seated at the desk in front of the window and making a start on a new story. My pen raced over the manuscript paper with a speed that I found quite astonishing, but after two or three hours it came to a halt, as though stayed by some invisible force. Having no other recourse, I stood up and began pacing about the room. It was at times like this that my megalomania was at its most extreme. In my savage joy, I felt that I had no parents, no wife or children, but only the life that gushed forth from my pen.

Not long after that, I was alarmed by the unexpected sight of a small white signboard hanging from the eaves of a shop. It was emblazoned with a trademark: an automobile tyre with wings. It made me think of the ancient Greek who placed his faith in artificial wings. He soared up high into the sky, until his wings were burnt by the sun and he went plunging into the ocean, where he drowned.

My only salvation now was sleep. But I didn’t have a single sleeping pill left. The grim prospect of more insomnia was utterly intolerable, but still, mustering a sort of desperate courage, I ordered coffee to be brought to the room and, like one demented, took up my pen. Two pages, five, seven, ten pages—the manuscript kept growing before my very eyes. I was filling the world of this novel with supernatural beasts, one of which was a self-portrait. But all of a sudden, fatigue began to cloud my head. At last I got up from the desk and lay down on the bed. I must have slept for forty or fifty minutes, when again I heard a voice whispering to me: “Le diable est mort.”

“To think, one minute you can be so detached from the world around, and the next, at the mercy of violent human passions …”

“To think, man can be virtuous one moment, and wicked the next.”

Six Characters in Search of an Author ,హెన్రీ-IV ఈ రెండు నాటకాల్లోనూ ప్రధాన పాత్రలు గతాన్ని వర్ణించే ప్రయత్నం చేస్తాయి.

ఈవిధంగా మనిషి తన గుర్తింపునీ, అస్తిత్వాన్నీ కనుగొనడానికి సహాయపడే శాస్త్రమైన కార్ల్ యుంగ్ మానసిక విశ్లేషణల్ని 'Six Characters in Search of an Author' ,'హెన్రీ -IV', 'The Late Mattia Pascal' వంటి రచనల ద్వారా పిరాండెల్లో తన కాల్పనిక ప్రపంచాలకు అన్వయించడాన్ని చూస్తాం.

The Loser - Thomas Bernhard

“The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion.” Nestbeschmutzer [ person who fouls their own nest ] గా అభివర్ణించబడినా స్వదేశానికి ఆవల మాత్రం కుండబద్దలుకొట్టినట్లుండే ఆయన రచనల శైలికి గాను యావత్ సాహితీ ప్రపంచపు మన్ననలందుకున్నారంటారు.

The whole time on my way to the teacher’s I kept on saying these three words: Absolutely no artist! Absolutely no artist! Absolutely no artist! If I hadn’t met Glenn Gould, I probably wouldn’t have given up the piano and I would have become a piano virtuoso and perhaps even one of the best piano virtuosos in the world, I thought in the inn. When we meet the very best, we have to give up, I thought.

కథ మొదట్లోనే నేరేటర్ గ్లెన్ ను పరిచయం చేస్తూ, he was so possessed by his art that we had to assume he couldn’t continue in that state for very long and would soon die returning to Canada from Salzburg, destroy himself with his music obsession, with his piano radicalism.

We never attained the inhuman state that Glenn attained, who by the way never escaped this inhuman state, who didn’t even want to escape this inhuman state.

From the first moment ours was a spiritual friendship. The majority of even the most famous piano players haven’t a clue about their art, he said. But it’s like that in all the arts, I said, just like that in painting, in literature, I said, even philosophers are ignorant of philosophy. Most artists are ignorant of their art. They have a dilettante’s notion of art, remain stuck all their lives in dilettantism, even the most famous artists in the world.

"To exist means nothing other than we despair" అనే Wertheimer ఫిర్యాదులు కొన్ని చోట్ల అదుపు తప్పి అసలు మనిషి పుట్టడమే తప్పన్నట్లు మొత్తం మనవాళిపై వెళ్ళగక్కే విద్వేషంలా అనిపిస్తాయి.

“Battle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster, and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.”

During his lifetime Thomas Bernhard’s texts provoked more than the ordinary share of scandals. But perhaps the most enduring scandal will turn out to be his very last text, his will: “Whatever I have written, whether published by me during my lifetime or as part of my literary papers still existing after my death, shall not be performed, printed or even recited for the duration of legal copyright within the borders of Austria, however this state identifies itself.” Bernhard had taken care not to reveal the contents of this will before he died; in fact, he even stipulated that news of his death not be announced until he was buried. This parting slap in the face of his native country thus came not only as a surprise; it came from the hand of a dead man, whose laughter rang out from the grave.

He had barricaded himself in his house. For life. All our lives the three of us have shared the desire to barricade ourselves from the world. All three of us were born barricade fanatics. But Glenn had carried his barricade fanaticism furthest.

Glenn confirmed what we sensed: New York is the only city in the world where a thinking person can breathe freely the minute he sets foot in it.

Immediately I quashed that idea, for I detested virtuosity and its attendant features from the very beginning, I detested above all appearing before the populace, I absolutely detested the applause, I couldn’t stand it, for years I didn’t know, is it the bad air in concert halls or the applause I can’t stand, or both, until I realized that I couldn’t stand virtuosity per se and especially not piano virtuosity. For I absolutely detested the public and everything that had to do with this public and therefore I detested the virtuoso (and virtuosos) personally as well.

Our loser is a fanatic, Glenn once said, he’s practically choking on self-pity all the time.

I had nothing to prove, only everything to lose, he said, I thought. Our wealth was probably our undoing, he said, but then immediately: Glenn’s wealth didn’t kill him, it allowed him to exploit his genius.

For fifty years are absolutely enough, I thought. We become contemptible when we go past fifty and are still living, continue our existence. We’re border-crossing weaklings, I thought, who have made ourselves twice as pitiful by putting fifty years behind us. Now I’m the shameless one, I thought. I envied the dead. For a moment I hated them for their superiority.

But we don’t always have to be studying something, I thought, it’s perfectly enough merely to think, to do nothing but think and give our thoughts free rein. To give in to our philosophical worldview, simply submit to our philosophical worldview, but that’s the hardest thing, I thought.

But simple people don’t understand complicated ones and thrust the latter back on themselves, more ruthlessly than any others, I thought. The biggest mistake is to think that one can be rescued by so-called simple people. A person goes to them in an extremely needy condition and begs desperately to be rescued and they thrust this person even more deeply into his own despair. And how are they supposed to save the extravagant one in his extravagance, I thought.

If a friend dies we nail him to his own sayings, his comments, kill him with his own weapons. On the one hand he lives on in what he said to us (and to others) all his life, on the other we kill him with it. We’re the most ruthless (toward him!) as far as his comments, his writings, are concerned, I thought, if we don’t have any more of his writings, because he prudently destroyed them, we go after his comments in order to destroy him, I thought. We exploit his unpublished papers in order to destroy even more the one who left them to us, to make the dead man even deader, and if he hasn’t left us the appropriate instructions to destroy his papers, we invent them, simply invent declarations against him, etc., I thought. Heirs are cruel, the survivors don’t have the slightest consideration, I thought. We’re searching for testimony against him, for us, I thought. We plunder everything that can be used against him in order to improve our situation, I thought, that’s the truth.

The so-called intellectual consumes himself in what he considers pathbreaking work and in the end has only succeeded in making himself ridiculous, whether he’s called Schopenhauer or Nietzsche, it doesn’t matter, even if he was Kleist or Voltaire we still see a pitiful being who has misused his head and finally driven himself into nonsense. Who’s been rolled over and passed over by history. We’ve locked up the great thinkers in our bookcases, from which they keep staring at us, sentenced to eternal ridicule, he said, I thought.

How good it is that none of these imperfect, incomplete works has ever appeared, I thought, had I published them, which would have posed no difficulty whatsoever, today I would be the unhappiest person imaginable, confronted daily with disastrous works crying out with errors, imprecision, carelessness, amateurishness. I avoided this punishment by destroying them, I thought, and suddenly I took great pleasure in the word destroying.

Everything about Wertheimer was always taken from somebody else, copied, he took everything from me, he copied me in everything, and so he even took my failure from me and copied it. Only his suicide was his own decision and came completely from him, I thought, and so he may have experienced, as they say, a sense of triumph in the end.

The lower classes are just as much a public menace as the upper classes, he said, they commit the same hideous acts, should be rejected just as categorically as the others, they’re different but they’re equally hideous, he said, I thought.

Wertheimer was an unrelieved emulator, he emulated anybody he thought was better off than he was, although he didn’t have the capacity for that, as I now see, I thought, he’d absolutely wanted to be an artist and thus walked into the mouth of disaster.

We say a word and destroy a person, although the person we’ve destroyed, at the moment we say out loud the word that destroys him, doesn’t take notice of this deadly fact, I thought.

An Evening with Susan Sontag

 An Evening with Susan :

* Not only must I summon the courage to be a bad writer - I must dare to be truly unhappy. Desperate. And not save myself, short-circuit the despair.

By refusing to be as unhappy as I truly am, I deprive myself of subjects. I’ve nothing to write about. Every topic burns. (6/19/76,NY) ( Is she trying to prove that all writers are unhappy ? )

* TB : Consumed (dissolved) by passion - passion leads to dissolution of the body. It was tuberculosis but they called it 'Love'. (Sigh !)

* Beckett found a new subject for the drama :- What am I going to do in the next second ? Weep, take out of my comb, sigh , sit, be silent, tell a joke, die. (He he he)

*Poets self-limited by some actual or mental regionalism, deliberately cultivated - so he / she will be seen to have [created ] his / her "universe".

Weakness of American poetry- It's anti-intellectual. Great poetry has ideas. ( You are hurting the egos of Eliot clan Susan )
