My Year of Rest and Relaxation - Ottessa Moshfegh

I was both relieved and irritated when Reva showed up, the way you’d feel if someone interrupted you in the middle of suicide. Not that what I was doing was suicide. In fact, it was the opposite of suicide. My hibernation was self-preservational. I thought that it was going to save my life.

She was a slave to vanity and status, which was not unusual in a place like Manhattan, but I found her desperation especially irritating. It made it hard for me to respect her intelligence. She was so obsessed with brand names, conformity, “fitting in.” She made regular trips down to Chinatown for the latest knockoff designer handbags. She’d given me a Dooney & Bourke wallet for Christmas once. She got us matching fake Coach key rings. Ironically, her desire to be classy had always been the déclassé thorn in her side. “Studied grace is not grace,” I once tried to explain. “Charm is not a hairstyle. You either have it or you don’t. The more you try to be fashionable, the tackier you’ll look.”

Education is directly proportional to anxiety, as you’ve probably learned, having gone to Columbia.

Being pretty only kept me trapped in a world that valued looks above all else.

OH, SLEEP. Nothing else could ever bring me such pleasure, such freedom, the power to feel and move and think and imagine, safe from the miseries of my waking consciousness. I was not a narcoleptic—I never fell asleep when I didn’t want to. I was more of a somniac. A somnophile. I’d always loved sleeping. It was one thing my mother and I had enjoyed doing together when I was a child. She was not the type to sit and watch me draw or read me books or play games or go for walks in the park or bake brownies. We got along best when we were asleep.

This was good, I thought. I was finally doing something that really mattered. Sleep felt productive. Something was getting sorted out. I knew in my heart—this was, perhaps, the only thing my heart knew back then—that when I’d slept enough, I’d be okay. I’d be renewed, reborn. I would be a whole new person, every one of my cells regenerated enough times that the old cells were just distant, foggy memories. My past life would be but a dream, and I could start over without regrets, bolstered by the bliss and serenity that I would have accumulated in my year of rest and relaxation.

I wanted to hold on to the house the way you’d hold on to a love letter. It was proof that I had not always been completely alone in this world. But I think I was also holding on to the loss, to the emptiness of the house itself, as though to affirm that it was better to be alone than to be stuck with people who were supposed to love you, yet couldn’t.

But I was determined to sleep it away.

And during this lull in the drama of sleep, I entered a stranger, less certain reality. Days slipped by obliquely, with little to remember, just the familiar dent in the sofa cushions, a froth of scum in the bathroom sink like some lunar landscape, craters bubbling on the porcelain when I washed my face or brushed my teeth. But that was all that went on. And I might have just dreamt up the scum. Nothing seemed really real. Sleeping, waking, it all collided into one gray, monotonous plane ride through the clouds. I didn’t talk to myself in my head. There wasn’t much to say. This was how I knew the sleep was having an effect: I was growing less and less attached to life. If I kept going, I thought, I’d disappear completely, then reappear in some new form. This was my hope. This was the dream.

I took the garbage out into the hallway and threw it down the trash chute. Having a trash chute was one of my favorite things about my building. It made me feel important, like I was participating in the world. My trash mixed with the trash of others. The things I touched touched things other people had touched. I was contributing. I was connecting.

Rejection, I have found, can be the only antidote to delusion

The art world had turned out to be like the stock market, a reflection of political trends and the persuasions of capitalism, fueled by greed and gossip and cocaine. I might as well have worked on Wall Street. Speculation and opinions drove not only the market but the products, sadly, the values of which were hinged not to the ineffable quality of art as a sacred human ritual—a value impossible to measure, anyway—but to what a bunch of rich assholes thought would “elevate” their portfolios and inspire jealousy and, delusional
as they all were, respect. I was perfectly happy to wipe out all that garbage from my mind.

The air tasted like when you test a battery with your tongue. Cold and electric. “I’m not fit to occupy space. Excuse me for living.”

I did the math: for the next four months, 120 days total, I would spend only forty hours in a conscious state.

“School is not for artists,” I could hear him say. “Art history is fascism.

Six Memos for the Next Millennium - Italo Calvino

* మరో విషయం ఏంటంటే మెడూసా రక్తం లోనుండి,ఒక రెక్కల గుఱ్ఱం పెగాసస్ జన్మిస్తుంది (the heaviness of stone is transformed into its opposite.).
Perseus's strength always lies in a refusal to look directly, but not in a refusal of the reality in which he is fated to live; he carries the reality with him and accepts it as his particular burden.

Were I to choose an auspicious image for the new millennium, I would choose that one: the sudden agile leap of the poet-philosopher who raises himself above the weight of the world, showing that with all his gravity he has the secret of lightness, and that what many consider to be the vitality of the times— noisy, aggressive, revving and roaring—belongs to the realm of death, like a cemetery for rusty old cars.

Certainly my own character corresponds to the traditional features of the guild to which I belong. I too have always been saturnine, whatever other masks I have attempted to wear. My cult of Mercury is perhaps merely an aspiration, what I would like to be. I am a Saturn who dreams of being a Mercury, and everything I write reflects these two impulses.

Since in each of my lectures I have set myself the task of recommending to the next millennium a particular value close to my heart, the value I want to recommend today is precisely this: In an age when other fantastically speedy, widespread media are triumphing, and running the risk of flattening all communication onto a single, homogeneous surface, the function of literature is communication between things that are different simply because they are different, not blunting but even sharpening the differences between them, following the true bent of written language.

In any case, a story is an operation carried out on the length of time involved, an enchantment that acts on the passing of time, either contracting or dilating it. Sicilian storytellers use the formula “lu cuntu nun metti tempu” (time takes no time in a story) when they want to leave out links or indicate gaps of months or even years. The technique of oral narration in the popular tradition follows functional criteria. It leaves out unnecessary details but stresses repetition:

In my last talk, on lightness, I quoted Lucretius, who in the combinatoria of the alphabet saw a model of the impalpable atomic structure of matter. Now I quote Galileo who, in the combinatoria of the alphabet (“the various arrangements of twenty little characters on a page”), saw the ultimate instrument of communication.

Exactitude :
Why do I feel the need to defend values that many people might take to be perfectly obvious? I think that my first impulse arises from a hypersensitivity or allergy. It seems to me that language is always used in a random, approximate, careless manner, and this distresses me unbearably. Please don't think that my reaction is the result of intolerance toward my neighbor: the worst discomfort of all comes from hearing myself speak. That's why I try to talk as little as possible. If I prefer writing, it is because I can revise each sentence until I reach the point where—if not exactly satisfied with my wordswords—I am able at least to eliminate those reasons for dissatisfaction that I can put a finger on. Literature—and I mean the literature that matches up to these requirements—is the Promised Land in which language becomes what it really ought to be.

Italian is the only language in which the word vago (vague) also means “lovely, attractive.” Starting out from the original meaning of “wandering,” the word vago still carries an idea of movement and mutability, which in Italian is associated both with uncertainty and indefi-niteness and with gracefulness and pleasure.

The emblem of the crystal might be used to distinguish a whole constellation of poets and writers, very different from one another, such as Paul Valery in France, Wallace Stevens in the United States, Gottfried Benn in Germany, Fernando Pessoa in Portugal, Ramon Gomez de la Serna in Spain, Massimo Bontempelli in Italy, and Jorge Luis Borges in Argentina.

Hoff-mannsthal ఒక చోట అంటారట “Depth is hidden. Where? On the surface.” అని.
Wittgenstein మరికాస్త ముందుకెళ్ళి అన్నారటా,“For what is hidden … is of no interest to us.

Visibility :

Multiplicity :
అలాగే ప్రౌస్ట్ గురించి రాస్తూ మనం అందుకోలేని విధంగా ప్రపంచం మన అంచనాల్ని దాటి నిరంతరం విస్తరిస్తూనే ఉంటుంది,and knowledge, for Proust, is attained by suffering this intangibility అంటారు..

Another very wrong idea that is also going the rounds at the moment is the equivalence that has been established between inspiration, exploration of the subconscious, and liberation, between chance, automatism, and freedom. Now this sort of inspiration, which consists in blindly obeying every impulse, is in fact slavery. The classical author who wrote his tragedy observing a certain number of known rules is freer than the poet who writes down whatever comes into his head and is slave to other rules of which he knows nothing.- Raymond Quineau.

But I would answer: Who are we, who is each one of us, if not a combinatoria of experiences, information, books we have read, things imagined? Each life is an encyclopedia, a library, an inventory of objects, a series of styles, and everything can be constantly shuffled and reordered in every way conceivable.

Cosmicomics - Italo Calvino

మొదటి కథ 'The Distance of the Moon'..
I thought only of the Earth. It was the Earth that caused each of us to be that someone he was rather than someone else; up there, wrested from the Earth, it was as if I were no longer that I, nor she that She, for me. I was eager to return to the Earth, and I trembled at the fear of having lost it. The fulfillment of my dream of love had lasted only that instant when we had been united, spinning between Earth and Moon; torn from its earthly soil, my love now knew only the heart-rending nostalgia for what it lacked: a where, a surrounding, a before, an after.

There was no way of telling time; whenever we started counting the nebula’s turns there were disagreements, because we didn’t have any reference points in the darkness, and we ended up arguing. So we preferred to let the centuries flow by as if they were minutes.

‘We’re hitting something!’, a meaningless expression (since before then nothing had ever hit anything, you can be sure),

We never really understood which uncle was the husband and which the brother, or exactly how they were related to us: in those days there were many things that were left vague

'A sign in space'
I couldn’t say I’ll make it the same or I’ll make it different, there were no things to copy, nobody knew what a line was, straight or curved, or even a dot, or a protuberance or a cavity.

All at one point: 'We all are packed 'like sardines' అంటాడు Qfwfq..
This was mere unfounded prejudice – that seems obvious to me – because neither before nor after existed, nor any place to immigrate from, but there were those who insisted that the concept of ‘immigrant’ could be understood in the abstract, outside of space and time.

‘Boys, the tagliatelle I would make for you!’, a true outburst of general love, initiating at the same moment the concept of space and, properly speaking,

Without colours:
How could we understand each other? Nothing in the world that lay before our eyes was sufficient to express what we felt for each other, but while I was in a fury to wrest unknown vibrations from things, she wanted to reduce everything to the colourless beyond of their ultimate substance.

According to my great-uncle, the lands that had emerged were a limited phenomenon: they were going to disappear just as they had cropped up or, in any event, they would be subject to constant changes: volcanoes, glaciations, earthquakes, upheavals, changes of climate and of vegetation. And our life in the midst of all this would have to face constant transformations, in the course of which whole races would disappear, and the only survivors would be those who were prepared to change the bases of their existence so radically that the reasons why living was beautiful would be completely overwhelmed and forgotten.

How much shall we bet ? :
‘Hurry, look at the way the planets are condensing: now tell me, which is the one where an atmosphere is going to be formed? Mercury? Venus? Earth? Mars? Come on: make up your mind! And while you’re about it, calculate for me the index of demographic increase on the Indian subcontinent during the British raj. What are you puzzling over?

And I think how beautiful it was then, through that void, to draw lines and parabolas, pick out the precise point, the intersection between space and time where the event would spring forth, undeniable in the prominence of its glow; whereas now events come flowing down without interruption, like cement being poured, one column next to the other, one within the other, separated by black and incongruous headlines, legible in many ways but intrinsically illegible, a doughy mass of events without form or direction, which surrounds, submerges, crushes all reasoning.

Earth's Holocaust - Nathaniel Hawthorne

'When Cain wished to slay his brother,he was at no loss for a weapon'

‘Alas! and woe is me! thus bemoaned himself a heavy-looking gentleman in green spectacles. ‘The world is utterly ruined, and there is nothing to live for any longer. The business of my life is snatched from me. Not a volume to be had for love or money!’    ‘This,’ remarked the sedate observer beside me, ‘is a bookworm—one of those men who are born to gnaw dead thoughts. His clothes, you see, are covered with the dust of libraries. He has no inward fountain of ideas; and, in good earnest, now that the old stock is abolished, I do not see what is to become of the poor fellow. Have you no word of comfort for him?’

‘My dear sir,’ said I to the desperate bookworm, ‘is not Nature better than a book? Is not the human heart deeper than any system of philosophy? Is not life replete with more instruction than past observers have found it possible to write down in maxims? Be of good cheer. The great book of Time is still spread wide open before us; and, if we read it aright, it will be to us a volume of eternal truth.’

‘Oh, my books, my books, my precious printed books!’ reiterated the forlorn bookworm. ‘My only reality was a bound volume; and now they will not leave me even a shadowy pamphlet!’    In fact, the last remnant of the literature of all the ages was now descending upon the blazing heap in the shape of a cloud of pamphlets from the press of the New World. These likewise were consumed in the twinkling of an eye, leaving the earth, for the first time since the days of Cadmus, free from the plague of letters- an enviable field for the authors of the next generation.

‘Could a poet but light a lamp at that glorious flame,’ remarked I, ‘he might then consume the midnight oil to some good purpose.’
‘That is the very thing which modern poets have been too apt to do, or at least to attempt, answered a critic. ‘The chief benefit to be expected from this conflagration of past literature undoubtedly is, that writers will henceforth be compelled to light their lamps at the sun or stars.

The truth was, that the human race had now reached a stage of progress so far beyond what the wisest and wittiest men of former ages had ever dreamed of that it would have been a manifest absurdity to allow the earth to be any longer encumbered with their poor achievements in the literary line.

It was not invariably the writer most frequent in the public mouth that made the most splendid appearance in the bonfire

The small, richly gilt French tomes of the last age, with the hundred volumes of Voltaire among them, went off in a brilliant shower of sparkles and little jets of flame; while the current literature of the same nation burned red and blue, and threw an infernal light over the visages of the spectators. converting them all to the aspect of party-coloured fiends.

The Toughest Indian in the World - Sherman Alexie

ఈ తెగలు 'రిజర్వేషన్స్' లో సమూహాలుగా నివసిస్తారు..Spokane-Coeur d'Alene తెగకు చెందిన అమెరికన్ రచయిత షెర్మాన్ అలెక్సీ రాసిన 'The Toughest Indian In The World' 2000 వ సంవత్సరంలో ప్రచురించబడింది.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian
"Well, life is a constant struggle between being an individual and being a member of the community."

Jeremiah’s virtue was reasonably intact, though he’d recently been involved in a flirtatious near-affair with a coworker. At the crucial moment, when the last button was about to be unbuttoned, when consummation was just a fingertip away, Jeremiah had pushed his potential lover away and said I can’t, I just can’t, I love my marriage. He didn’t admit to love for his spouse, partner, wife. No, he confessed his love for marriage, for the blessed union, for the legal document, for the shared mortgage payments, and for their four children.

Lynn and Jeremiah had often discussed race as a concept, as a foreign country they occasionally visited, or as an enemy that existed outside their house, as a destructive force they could fight against as a couple, as a family. But race was also a constant presence, a house-guest and permanent tenant who crept around all the rooms in their shared lives, opening drawers, stealing utensils and small articles of clothing, changing the temperature.

ఫైటర్ తన దారిన తాను వెళ్ళిపోయాక  "At that moment,if you had broken open my heart you could have looked inside and seen the thin white skeletons of one thousand salmon." (Spokane Indian tribe also called Salmon people)..

That was how I learned to be silent in the presence of white people. The silence is not about hate or pain or fear. Indians just like to believe that white people will vanish, perhaps explode into smoke, if they are ignored enough times. Perhaps a thousand white families are still waiting for their sons and daughters to return home, and can’t recognize them when they float back as morning fog.

He hugged his backpack more tightly, using it as a barrier between his chest and the dashboard. An Indian hitchhiker’s version of a passenger-side air bag.

“Thanks for the ride, cousin,” he said as he climbed out. Indians always call each other cousin, especially if they’re strangers.

స్ట్రీట్ ఫైటర్ జూనియర్ తో ఎందుకు గొడవపడ్డావు అని జెరోనిమోని అడిగితే "I wanted to be with my people" అంటాడు..

Personally, I like bottled water, with gas, as the Europeans like to say. If I drink enough of that bubbly water in the right environment, I can get drunk. After a long night of Perrier or Pellegrino, I can still wake up with a vicious hangover. Obviously, I place entirely too much faith in the power of metaphor.

I decided that her face resembled most of the furniture in the bar: dark, stained by unknown insults, and in a continual state of repair.

డి వాన్స్ రాసిన Hillbilly Elegy ,Viet Thanh Nguyen 'The Sympathizer' లాంటి రచనల్ని తలపించాయి.

South by Southwest
Indians will love anything if given the chance. I loved our house. I cried whenever I left it. I never wanted to leave it. I wanted to grow old in that house. I wanted to become the crazy elder who’d lived in the same house for all of his life. When I died there, I wanted to have ninety years of stories hanging in the closets.

He leaned in close to me. I could smell him. He smelled like the water and trees of home.

“Yes, you are, you’re a worm. You’re less than a worm to them. You’re an exile, you’re a leper, you’re a pariah, you’re a peon, you’re nothing to them. Nothing."

“Indian dot-in-the-head or Indian arrow-in-the-heart?”

Grandmother and grandson sat in the small kitchen of her home—their home!—and found no need to speak to each other. Because they were Indians, they gave each other room to think, to invent the next lie, joke, story, compliment, or insult. He ate; she watched.

You’ve colonized Indian land but I am not about to let you colonize my heart and mind

Goat Days - Benyamin

దీని ఆంగ్లానువాదం "Man Asian Literary Prize (2012)" లాంగ్ లిస్టులో స్థానం సంపాదించుకోవడంతో పాటు "DSC Prize for South Asian Literature (2013)" ను కూడా గెలుచుకుంది.

అడ్రీ హెప్బర్న్ అంటుంది, 'I don't want to be alone,I want to be left alone' అని.

Those plants taught me life's great lessons of hope. They whispered to me :Najeeb, adopted son of the desert, like us,you too must preserve your life and wrestle with this desert.Hot winds and scorching days will pass.Don't surrender to them.Don't grow weary,or you might have to pay with your life.Don't give in.Lie half dead,as if meditating.Feign nothingness.Convey the impression that you will never resurrect.Secretly appeal to Allah the merciful. He will recognize your presence. He will hear your cries. And finally an opportune moment will come for you. This hot wind will blow away. This heat will dissipate. The cold wind of time will beckon you. Then, only then, should you slowly raise your head from the earth, announce your presence and, then, quickly, spring to freedom.Bloom and come to fruit in the morrow.
I lent my ears to the words of the little plants.I waited patiently for the opportune moment.

Even while heading towards freedom,it is agonizing to depart from our loved ones.I experienced intense grief in that happy moment of freedom.

I suddenly lost all urge to escape.Even when it is set free,a goat reared in a cage will return to the cage.I had become like that.I can't go anywhere in this figure and form.I am a goat.My life is in this masara. Till I end my life or die of some disease.I don't want to show anyone this scruffy shape, this scruffy face, this scruffy life.Mine is a goat's life.

I was like a flower that forced to blossom in the desert.

Piano Stories - Felisberto Hernandez

తన కథలకు ఎటువంటి లాజికల్ స్ట్రక్చర్ ఉండదని తన మొదటి కథ 'How Not To Explain My Stories' లో చెప్తూనే తన ప్రపంచంలోకి మనల్ని ఆహ్వానిస్తారు రచయిత.

My stories have no logical structures. Even the consciousness undeviatingly watching over them is unknown to me. At a given moment I think a plant is about to be born in some corner of me. Aware of something strange going on, I begin to watch for it, sensing that it may have artistic promise. I would be happy if the idea weren’t a complete loss. But I can only watch and wait, indefinitely: I don’t know how to nurture the plant or make it bloom. All I have is the feeling or hope that it will grow leaves of poetry or of something that could become poetry when seen by certain eyes.
I’ve lived near other people and collected memories that don’t belong to me.

An irresistible desire to cry was bloating up in me. I held it back with all my strength while a nightmarish silence fell about my ears and from my head and face down my whole body. Everything around me — the piano, the lamp, Celina still holding the pencil — radiated a strange heat. At that moment the objects were more alive than we were.

Felisberto Hernández is a writer like no other: like no European, nor any Latin American. He is an “irregular” who eludes all classification and labeling, yet is unmistakable on any page to which one might randomly open one of his books
What never quite went to sleep was the specter of the magnolias. Although I had left behind the trees where they lived, they were with me, hidden in the back of my eyes, and suddenly I felt their presence, light as a breath somehow blown into the air by thought, scattered around the room, and blending into the furniture. Which was why, later on — in spite of the miseries I went through in that room — I never stopped seeing the faint glow of magnolias on the furniture and among the white and black shapes.
Also, just where the breast began, there was a flower with such sharp edges that if you moved too fast you could cut your fingers on it (and I couldn’t see why anyone would have wanted to reproduce a flower that grew wild on every fence along the road).
Her full, kindly face seemed to portray the word “grandmother”: she made me feel how round that word was. (Whenever a friend’s grandmother had a thin face, I thought the word “grandmother” didn’t fit her and she would probably not be as kindhearted as mine.)
What I was thinking just then was, “If I spend much longer in the past I’ll never get out again and I’ll go mad: I’ll be like one of those unhappy souls trapped by a secret in his past for the rest of his life. I’ve got to row with all my might back to the present."
It was on such a night, when I was running past times through my mind, carelessly, the way you let coins slip through your fingers, that the memory of Celina visited me.
My memories are a silent movie: I can put my old eyes on to see them, but my ears are deaf to them.
But until I fell asleep I was at the mercy of my memories, like a spectator obliged to watch two very different companies perform without knowing what scene or which memories would light up first, how they would alternate, or what the relations between the actors would be, because the theater and producer were always the same, usually the same author was involved and the main characters were always a man and a child.
I tried to imagine the character it portrayed but could think of nothing serious enough: perhaps he also had stopped taking himself as seriously as he used to in life and spent his time now playing with the pigeons.
“How you must regret having offered me your hospitality!”
“On the contrary, I was thinking how unfortunate it will be to have an empty room after you’ve stayed in it.”
I looked out at a dimly lit sky that was trying to unload its bloated clouds on the house.
All these memories lived in some part of me that was like a small lost town known only to itself, cut off from the rest of the world. For many years no one had been born or died there. The founders of the town had been my childhood memories. Then, years later, some foreigners had arrived: my memories of Argentina. This afternoon I had the feeling I was in that town for a rest, as if misery had granted me a holiday.
