The Lost Soul - Olga Tokarczuk

"If someone could look down on us from above, they’d see that the world is full of people running about in a hurry, sweating and very tired and their lost souls always left behind, unable to keep up with their owners. The result is great confusion as the souls lose their heads and the people cease to have hearts. The souls know they’ve lost their owners, but most of the people don’t realise that they’ve lost their own souls."

"He felt as if the world around him were flat, as if he were moving across a smooth page in a math book that was covered in evenly spaced squares... "

We want to belong. We want to fit in.

"You must find a place of your own, sit there quietly and wait for your soul."

In Other Worlds : Essays In Cultural Politics - Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak

అందువల్ల భాషాసౌందర్యాల మాటున చేర్చి భావగర్భంగా సమాజంలోకి ప్రవేశపెట్టే ఇటువంటి భావజాలాల్ని నమ్మి పాఠకులు ఆ కాల్పనికతను వాస్తవమని భ్రమపడే అవకాశం ఉంది [the symbolic masquerade of the Imaginary].

It is not surprising that the book ends with a promise to write further: “I hope to write of her that which has never been written of any other woman.” In Dante’s text, Beatrice is fully sublated into an object—to be written of, not to.

To keep the woman out. Here the third woman in Yeats’s life plays a role. She was caught on the rebound within the institution of marriage, and had a masculine nickname, “Georgie Yeats.” She was the transparent medium through which the voices of Yeats’s instructors, themselves at first dependent upon his own text, travelled: “On the afternoon of October 24th 1917,” Yeats writes in A Vision, “four days after my marriage, my wife surprised me by attempting automatic writing.… The unknown writer took his theme at first from my just published Per Amica Silentia Lunae”. We are back to “Ego Dominus Tuus.” Is it the unknown writer who is Yeats’s lord, is it Yeats who is his wife’s lord? We are caught in another labyrinth of “I,” “you,” and mastery.

"Some birds are not meant to be caged.."

You are neither in right place nor in right company in social media." is my answer :)

Nothing Personal - James Baldwin, Richard Avedon

Where do they come from? how did they become—these faces—so cruel and so sterile? they are related to whom? they are related to what? They do not relate to the buildings, certainly—no human being could; I suspect, in fact, that many of us live with the carefully suppressed terror that these buildings are about to crash down on us; the nature of the movement of the people in the streets is certainly very close to panic. You will search in vain for lovers.

Everyone is rushing, God knows where, and everyone is looking for God knows what—but it is clear that no one is happy here, and that something has been lost. Only, sometimes, uptown, along the river, perhaps, I’ve sometimes watched strangers here, here for a day or a week or a month, or newly transplanted, watched a boy and a girl, or a boy and a boy, or a man and a woman, or a man and a child, or a woman and a child; yes, there was something recognizable, something to which the soul responded, something to make one smile, even to make one weep with exultation. They were yet distinguishable from the concrete and the steel. One felt that one might approach them without freezing to death.

A EUROPEAN FRIEND of mine and myself were arrested on Broadway, in broad daylight, while looking for a taxi. He had been here three days, had not yet mastered English, and I was showing him the wonders of the city of New York. He was impressed and bewildered, though he also seemed rather to wonder what purpose it served—when, suddenly, down from heaven, or up through the sidewalk, two plain-clothes men appeared, separated us, scarcely a word was spoken.

I watched my friend, carried by the scruff of the neck, vanish into the crowd. Not a soul seemed to notice; apparently it happened every day. I was pushed into the doorway of a drugstore, and frisked, made to empty my pockets, made to roll up my sleeves, asked what I was doing around here—“around here” being the city in which I was born.

అతి మామూలుగా విషయాన్ని చెబుతూనే ఈ క్రింది వాక్యాల్లో 'in the land of the free' అని వాక్యాన్ని ముగించడంలో ఎంత వ్యంగ్యం,కోపం ధ్వనిస్తుందో !

I am an old hand at this—policemen have always loved to pick me up and, sometimes, to beat me up—so I said nothing during this entire operation. I was worried about my friend, who might fail to understand the warmth of his reception in the land of the free; worried about his command of English, especially when confronted by the somewhat special brand used by the police.

Talking to Americans is usually extremely uphill work. We are afraid to reveal ourselves because we trust ourselves so little. American attitudes are appalling, but so are the attitudes of most of the people in the world. What is stultifying here is that the attitude is presented as the person; one is expected to justify the attitude in order to reassure the person—whom, alas, one has yet to meet, who is light-years away, in some dreadful, private labyrinth. And in this labyrinth the person is desperately trying not to find out what he really feels. Therefore, the truth cannot be told, even about one’s attitudes: we live by lies. And not only, for example, about race—whatever, by this time, in this country, or, indeed, in the world, this word may mean—but about our very natures. The lie has penetrated to our most private moments, and the most secret chambers of our hearts.

How is it possible for the child to grow up if the child is not loved? Children can survive without money or security or safety or things: but they are lost if they cannot find a loving example, for only this example can give them a touchstone for their lives. Thus far and no further: this is what the father must say to the child. If the child is not told where the limits are, he will spend the rest of his life trying to discover them. For the child who is not told where the limits are knows, though he may not know he knows it, that no one cares enough about him to prepare him for his journey.

People who work at the most disgraceful jobs in order to pay, for the luxury of someone else’s attention, twenty-five dollars an hour. To my black and toughened, Puritan conscience, it seems an absolute scandal; and, again, this peculiar self-indulgence certainly has a dreadful effect on their children, whom they are quite unable to raise. And they cannot raise them because they have opted for the one commodity which is absolutely beyond human reach: safety.

This is one of the reasons, as it seems to me, that we are so badly educated, for to become educated (as all tyrants have always known) is to become inaccessibly independent, it is to acquire a dangerous way of assessing danger, and it is to hold in one’s hands a means of changing reality. This is not at all the same thing as “adjusting” to reality: the effort of “adjusting” to reality simply has the paradoxical effect of destroying reality, since it substitutes for one’s own speech and one’s own voice an interiorized public cacophony of quotations

And love will simply have no choice but to go into battle with space and time and, furthermore, to win.

God help the innocent here, that man or woman who simply wants to love, and be loved.

Unless this would-be lover is able to replace his or her backbone with a steel rod, he or she is doomed. This is no place for love. I know that I am now expected to make a bow in the direction of those millions of unremarked, happy marriages all over America, but I am unable honestly to do so because I find nothing whatever in our moral and social climate—and I am now thinking particularly of the state of our children—to bear witness to their existence. I suspect that when we refer to these happy and so marvelously invisible people, we are simply being nostalgic concerning the happy, simple, God-fearing life which we imagine ourselves once to have lived. In any case, wherever love is found, it unfailingly makes itself felt in the individual, the personal authority of the individual. Judged by this standard, we are a loveless nation. The best that can be said is that some of us are struggling. And what we are struggling against is that death in the heart which leads not only to the shedding of blood, but which reduces human beings to corpses while they live.

And look at the New York buildings, rising up like tyrannical eagles, glass and steel and aluminum smiting the air, jerry-built, inept, contemptuous; who can function in these buildings and for whose profit were they built? Unloved indeed: look at our children. They roam the streets, as arrogant and irreverent as business-men and as dangerous as those gangs of children who roamed the streets of bombed European cities after the last World War. Only, these children have no strange and grinning soldiers to give them chocolate candy or chewing gum, and no one will give them a home.

Time Lived, Without Its Flow - Denise Riley

Riley’s project is to describe and interrogate ‘that acute sensation of being cut off from any temporal flow after the sudden death of your child.’

No tenses any more. Among the recent labels for temporality is ‘time dilation’, referring to our perception’s elasticity, its capacity to be baggy. But are there any neurological accounts of this feeling of completely arrested time? It feels as if some palpable cerebral alteration has taken place. As if, to make the obvious joke, your temporal lobes have been flooded and are now your a-temporal lobes.

Not that I have delusions, as such. But a strong impression that I’ve been torn off, brittle as any dry autumn leaf, liable to be blown onto the tracks in the underground station, or to crumble as someone brushes by me in this public world where people rush about loudly, with their astonishing confidence. Each one of them a candidate for sudden death, and so helplessly vulnerable. If they do grasp that at any second their own lives might stop, they can’t hold on to that expectation. As I do now. Later everyone on the street seems to rattle together like dead leaves in heaps.

Far from taking refuge deeply inside yourself, there is no longer any inside, and you have become only outward. As a friend, who’d survived the suicide of the person closest to her, says: ‘I was my two eyes set burning in my skull. Behind them there was only vacancy.’

And you yourself will not be the same. But something, nevertheless, stays: recognition as re-cognition; to know again, but because of the interval, to know a bit differently.

The thought behind I strove to join
Unto the thought before,
But sequence raveled out of sound
Like balls upon a floor.
--------------------------
I felt a cleaving in my mind
As if my brain had split;
I tried to match it, seam by seam,
But could not make them fit.
The thought behind I strove to join
Unto the thought before,
But sequence raveled out of sound
Like balls upon a floor.

Previously I hadn’t believed that speech is simply the translation of something already formulated in thought. Now I was faced with the evidence that sometimes it is, but that the translation can fail.

Perhaps only through forgetting the dead could it become possible to allow them to become dead. To finally be dead. And that could only follow – once time itself had taken the initiative here – from consigning them to a time that had decided to resume its old flow. Of its own accord. When or if this may ever happen, I can’t know. And can’t want it.

You’ve slipped into a state of a-chronicity. From its serene perspective you realize, to your astonishment, that to dwell inside a time that had the property of ‘flowing’ was merely one of a range of possible temporal perceptions. For your time can pause, and you with it – though you’re left sharply alive within its stopping. Your apprehension of sequence itself is halted. Where you have no impression of any succession of events, there is no linkage between them, and no cause. Anything at all might follow on from any one instant. You are tensed for anything – or, equally, are poised for nothing. No plans can be entertained seriously, although you keep up an outward show of doing so. Where induction itself has failed, so does your capacity for confident anticipation. So your task now is to inhabit the only place left to you – the present instant – with equanimity, and in as much good heart as you can contrive. For one moment will not, now, carry you onward to the next.

Nevertheless your search for any evidence of fellow feeling is restless, almost comically so. You’re paralysed and not, as far as you know, temporarily (for this condition feels eternal) but temporally. And yet some longing drives you onward to comb through any writing that might carry the reassurance that this cessation of your time is both well known and fully recorded. At times of great tension, we may well find ourselves hunting for some published resonances in literature of what we’ve come to feel. I realize that this might quickly be condemned as a sentimental search for ‘identification’, for the cosiness of finding one’s own situation mirrored in print. Still, I think we can save it from that withering assessment. Instead we might reconsider the possibility of a literature of consolation, what that could be or what it might do.

When We Cease to Understand the World - Benjamín Labatut

ఒకవేళ తమ ఆవిష్కరణల ఫలితాలను ముందే ఊహించి ఉంటే వాటిపై వారు వెలిబుచ్చిన అభిప్రాయాలేమిటి అనే దిశగా రాసిన రచనే చిలీ దేశస్థుడైన రచయిత Benjamín Labatut రాసిన ఈ 'When We Cease to Understand the World'.

Mario Vargas Llosa 'Notes on the death of culture' పేరిట రాసిన కొన్ని వ్యాసాల్లో ఈ విధంగా రాస్తారు : "శాస్త్రజ్ఞులు తమ రంగాల్లో మాత్రమే ప్రతిభావంతులు.

శరీరం మీద యుద్ధోన్మాదం తాలూకా బొబ్బలతో ఆయన స్నేహితుడు Ejnar Hertzsprung కి రాసిన ఒక ఉత్తరంలో,“We have reached the highest point of civilization. All that is left for us is to decay and fall.”

Influenced by the clamour of the May ’68 protests all around him, he called on more than a hundred students during a masterclass at the University of Paris in Orsay to renounce “the vile and dangerous practice of mathematics” in light of the hazards humanity was facing. It was not politicians who would destroy the planet, he told them, but scientists like them who were “marching like sleepwalkers towards the apocalypse”.

From that day forward, he refused to participate in any maths conference that would not allow him to devote equal time to ecology and pacifism. During his talks, he gave away apples and figs grown in his garden and warned about the destructive power of science: “The atoms that tore Hiroshima and Nagasaki apart were split not by the greasy fingers of a general, but by a group of physicists armed with a fistful of equations.” Grothendieck could not stop fretting over the possible effects that his own ideas could have on the world. What new horrors would spring forth from the total comprehension that he sought? What would mankind do if it could reach the heart of the heart?

“My first impression on hearing him lecture was that he had been transported to our planet from an alien civilization in some distant solar system in order to speed up our intellectual evolution,” a professor from the University of California at Santa Cruz said of him. Despite how radical they were, the mathematical landscapes Grothendieck conjured up gave no impression of artificiality.

Her eclectic reading and constant isolation had produced an unusually alert mind and an insatiable curiosity; during Schrödinger’s previous visit, she had assailed him with questions about the most recent advances in theoretical physics, about which she seemed to be thoroughly informed, despite having had virtually no contact with the outside world and never having ventured beyond the region surrounding the sanatorium. At just sixteen years old, Herwig had the mind, the bearing and the presence of someone much older. Schrödinger was quite the opposite.

The physicist sat down next to her, and she opened a book she held in her hands, reading the following passage: “One ghost succeeds the other like waves on the illusory sea of birth and death. In the course of a life, there is nothing but the rise and fall of material and mental forms, while the unfathomable reality remains. In every creature sleeps an infinite intelligence, hidden and unknown, but destined to awaken, to tear the volatile web of the sensory mind, break the chrysalis of flesh, and conquer time and space."

It was not the first time he had become obsessed with a woman that young, but there was something different about Miss Herwig, something that disarmed him, that put his self-confidence in jeopardy.

Then he would call his wife to pick him up and would never set foot in the clinic again, even if it meant coughing himself to death in the streets like a beggar. Anything was better than bearing this infantile infatuation, which deepened the longer they spent together.

In his nightmare, the goddess Kali would sit on his chest like an enormous beetle, crushing him so that he could not move. With her necklace of human heads, and brandishing swords, axes and knives in her many arms, she would bathe him in drops of blood that fell from the tip of her tongue and jets of milk from her swollen breasts, rubbing his groin until he was no longer capable of bearing the arousal, at which point she would decapitate him and swallow his genitals. Miss Herwig listened to him impassively and told him his dream was not a nightmare, but a blessing: of all the forms taken on by the female aspect of the divine, Kali was the most compassionate, because she granted moksha—liberation—to her children, and her love for them extended beyond all human comprehension. Her black skin, she said, was the symbol of the void that transcends all form, the cosmic uterus in which all phenomena gestated, while her necklace of skulls comprised the egos she had freed from the principal object of their identification, which was nothing less than the body itself. The castration Schrödinger suffered at the Dark Mother’s hands was the greatest gift he could receive, a mutilation necessary so that his new consciousness could be born.

No one dared deny the importance of this new wave mechanics, but pretty soon some began to ask themselves the same questions that had troubled Schrödinger in the Villa Herwig. “It is a truly beautiful theory. One of the most perfect, precise and elegant man has discovered. But there is something strange in it. It’s as if it were warning us: don’t take me seriously. The world I reveal is not the one you are thinking of when you employ me,” wrote Robert Oppenheimer, one of the first to question what wave functions actually had to say about reality.

He spilled the contents of the bottle into what was left of his beer and pushed the glass towards Heisenberg. “You look tired, Professor. You should take better care of yourself. Did you know the first symptom of a psychological disturbance is the inability to contend with the future? If you consider that, you will realize how implausible it is that we are able to exert control over even an hour of our lives. How hard it is to control our thoughts! You, for example—it is obvious you are possessed. That you are in thrall to your intellect as a degenerate is in thrall to a woman’s cunt. You are bewitched, Professor, you’ve been sucked inside your own head. Come on, drink. Don’t make me ask you twice.”

Reality, they said to those present, does not exist as something separate from the act of observation. A quantum object has no intrinsic properties. An electron is not in any fixed place until it is measured; it is only in that instant that it appears. Before being measured, it has no attributes; prior to observation, it cannot even be conceived of. It exists in a specific manner when it is detected by a specific instrument. Between one measurement and the next, there is no point in asking how it moves, what it is, or where it is located. Like the moon in Buddhism, a particle does not exist: it is the act of measuring that makes it a real object.

He renounced his post at the University of Kyoto, and wrote a last entry before shutting down his blog, stating that, in mathematics, certain things should remain hidden, “for the good of all of us”. This incomprehensible and apparently capricious gesture only confirmed what many had feared: Mochizuki had succumbed to Grothendieck’s curse.

“Doing mathematics is like making love,” wrote Grothendieck, whose sexual impulses rivalled his spiritual inclinations.

I Who Have Never Known Men - Jacqueline Harpman

There’s no continuity and the world I have come from is utterly foreign to me. I haven’t heard its music, I haven’t seen its painting, I haven’t read its books, except for the handful I found in the refuge and of which I understood little. I know only the stony plain, wandering, and the gradual loss of hope. I am the sterile offspring of a race about which I know nothing, not even whether it has become extinct. Perhaps, somewhere, humanity is flourishing under the stars, unaware that a daughter of its blood is ending her days in silence. There is nothing we can do about it.

ఇదే రచన తొలుత 'The Mistress of Silence' పేరుతో అనువదించబడింది.

‘We’re not very resourceful, are we!’ said Greta ruefully.

‘We come from a world where it wasn’t necessary, everything was ready-made and we never asked how things were produced,’ replied Frances.

I would have sworn it couldn’t happen to me; I’d seen women trembling, crying and screaming, but I’d remained unaffected by their tragedy, a witness to impulses I found unintelligible, remaining silent even when I did what they asked of me to assist them.

Admittedly, we were all caught up in the same drama that was so powerful, so all-embracing that I was unaware of anything that wasn’t related to it, but I had come to think that I was different. And now, racked with sobs, I was forced to acknowledge too late, much too late, that I too had loved, that I was capable of suffering and that I was human after all.

How can you feel privileged not to have something that everyone else has? I felt they were deceiving me.

I was choked with admiration. I’d never seen anything so beautiful, because I’d never seen anything beautiful that was the work of a human hand. I had seen the beauty of the sky, the changing shapes of the clouds, softly falling rain; I had seen the slowly moving stars, and a few flowers, but here, I was seeing furniture, paintings hanging on the walls, vases, a small carving – but I shouldn’t be describing these things so precisely, because that first moment I saw only the interplay of lines, shapes and harmonious colours, an unfathomable configuration that completely overwhelmed me, and brought tears to my eyes because of the feeling of calm and tranquillity that reminded me of the women’s singing, in the past, when it rose up over the plain. The colours were beautifully in tune with each other, and harmonised with the volumes and dimensions of the room.

I’d listened closely, and I was surprised at how much they had to say, the passion with which they repeated the same thing in ten different ways so as to avoid accepting that they’d had absolutely nothing to say to one another for ages. But human beings need to speak, otherwise they lose their humanity, as I’ve realised these past few years. And gradually, I began to feel sorry for those women determined to carry on living, pretending they were active and making decisions in the prison where they were locked up for ever, from which death was the only release – but would they remove the bodies? – and where they couldn’t even kill one another.

Oh! That first time I went up the stairs! When I think of it, my eyes fill with tears and I feel that compulsion, that surge of triumph. I think I’d be prepared to relive twelve years of captivity to experience that miraculous ascent, the wonderful certainty that made me so light that I flew up the hundred steps in one go, without stopping for breath, and I was laughing.

It wasn’t until we reached the ninth bunker that we found fabric, but already in the second, we’d found a packet of coffee. I’d never tasted coffee and I didn’t like it very much. I watched my companions shriek with delight and pleasure as they imagined the others’ joy when they returned with such a wonderful find, but I was unable to share their excitement.

I gazed at the ten houses in the village which I’d so enjoyed building. Behind the biggest one was the cemetery where I’d buried Anthea. Only now, I tell myself that what I’d felt for her, the trust that slowly built up, the constant preference for her company and the joy each time I was reunited with her after an expedition were probably what the women called love.

Anthea had taught me the alphabet and the rudiments of reading by drawing the letters in the sand. At the time, it bored her, because she couldn’t see what I would do with such knowledge, but I had insisted: there was too little to learn for me not to grasp at everything I could. I had words in my head for things I’d never seen, let alone touched, as I was now doing. I recognised the book at once and I was so overwhelmed that I felt almost giddy. I think that if I’d been standing, I’d have collapsed. I had in my hands the most precious of treasures, a spring from which to drink the knowledge of that world to which I would never have access.
