Gratitude - Oliver Sacks

I cannot pretend I am without fear. But my predominant feeling is one of gratitude. I have loved and been loved; I have been given much and I have given something in return; I have read and traveled and thought and written. I have had an intercourse with the world, the special intercourse of writers and readers.

Mercury,My Own Life,My Periodic table,Sabbath

I often feel that life is about to begin, only to realize it is almost over.

I have no belief in (or desire for) any postmortem existence, other than in the memories of friends and the hope that some of my books may still “speak” to people after my death.

Over the last few days, I have been able to see my life as from a great altitude, as a sort of landscape, and with a deepening sense of the connection of all its parts. This does not mean I am finished with life. On the contrary, I feel intensely alive, and I want and hope in the time that remains to deepen my friendships, to say farewell to those I love, to write more, to travel if I have the strength, to achieve new levels of understanding and insight. This will involve audacity, clarity, and plain speaking; trying to straighten my accounts with the world. But there will be time, too, for some fun (and even some silliness, as well).

Times of stress throughout my life have led me to turn, or return, to the physical sciences, a world where there is no life, but also no death.

I almost certainly will not see my polonium (eighty-fourth) birthday, nor would I want any polonium around, with its intense, murderous radioactivity.

I’m glad I’m not dead!” sometimes bursts out of me when the weather is perfect. (This is in contrast to a story I heard from a friend who, walking with Samuel Beckett in Paris on a perfect spring morning, said to him, “Doesn’t a day like this make you glad to be alive?” to which Beckett answered, “I wouldn’t go as far as that.”)

Reservoir 13 - Jon McGregor

People just wanted to open their mouths and talk, and they didn’t much mind what came out.

It had been more than six months and still there was nothing. No footprints, no clothing, no persons of interest, no sightings on any CCTV. It was as though the ground had just opened up and swallowed her whole. Journalists used this phrase by way of metaphor or hyperbole; people in the village knew it as a thing that could happen.

There were dreams about her walking home. Walking beside the motorway, walking across the moor, walking up out of one of the reservoirs, rising from the dark grey water with her hair streaming and her clothes draped with long green weeds.

They had wanted to find her. They had wanted to know she was safe. They had felt involved, although they barely knew her.

మొత్తానికి ఈ Reservoir 13 నా సహనానికి పరీక్ష..Man Booker లాంగ్ లిస్ట్ లో Lincoln in the Bardo తప్ప మిగతావేవీ ఇంకా చదవకపోయినా George Saunders బరిలో ఉండగా ఈ రచనతో ఆయనకు గట్టి పోటీ ఇవ్వడం కష్టమే.

When freedom is outlawed only the outlaws will be free, he said.

Loose lips sink ships.

He sat on a bench and read the Valley Echo while the whippet drank. He knew all the names of the people in the Echo but there were plenty he couldn’t place if they walked by. They didn’t tend to socialise.

On the reservoirs the water was whipped up into whitecaps. It was a decade now the girl had been missing, and although little talked about she was still in people’s thoughts. Her name was Rebecca, or Becky, or Bex. She’d been wearing a white hooded top with a navy-blue body-warmer. She would be twenty-three years old by now. She had been seen in the beech wood, climbing a tree. She had been seen at the railway station. She had been seen by the side of the road. She had been looked for, everywhere. She could have arranged to meet somebody, and been driven safely away. She could have fallen down a hole. She could have been hurt by her parents in some terrible mistake. She could have gone away because she’d chosen to, or because she had no choice. People still wanted to know.

Fantastic night and other stories - Stefan Zweig

Stefan Zweig.. Fantastic Night, Letter from an Unknown Woman,The Fowler Snared,The Invisible Collection

At that moment I was fully aware for the first time how far advanced the process of paralysis already was in me—it was as if I were moving through flowing, bright water without being halted or taking root anywhere, and I knew very well that this chill was something dead and corpse-like, not yet surrounded by the foul breath of decomposition but already numbed beyond recovery, a grimly cold lack of emotion. It was the moment that precedes real, physical death and outwardly visible decay.

There was a kind of sheet of glass between me and my immediate surroundings, and my will was not strong enough to break it.

For this was the world in which I lived—the aura of perfume and elegance that wafted around the kaleidoscopic confusion.

I felt some relationship in myself with what was animal, instinctive, common.

I felt there must be something terribly strange about me that meant I could never mingle with anyone, but was separate from the dense mass, floating like a drop of oil on moving water.

Letter from an Unknown Woman చాలా విశిష్టమైనది..

I realized that you are two people rolled into one: that you are an ardent, lighthearted youth devoted to sport and adventure; and at the same time, in your art, a deeply read and highly cultured man, grave, and with a keen sense of responsibility. Unconsciously I perceived what everyone who knew you came to perceive, that you led two lives. One of these was known to all, it was the life open to the whole world; the other was turned away from the world, and was fully known only to yourself.

I understand now (you have taught me!) that a girl’s or a woman’s face must be for a man something extraordinarily mutable. It is usually nothing more than the reflection of moods which pass as swiftly as an image vanishes from a mirror. A man can readily forget a woman’s face, because age modifies its lights and shades, and because at different times the dress gives it so different a setting. Resignation comes to a woman as her knowledge grows.

Was it the ardent but aimless yearning that was so plainly manifest in her expression, the yearning of those wonderful hours in a girl’s life when her eyes look covetously forth into the universe because she has not yet found the one thing to which in due time she will cling—to rot there as algae cling to and rot on a floating log?

“You seem to be hinting that I have the mannerisms of your German novelists, that I am lyrically diffuse, stilted, sentimental, tedious.

An eerie business to watch the handling of these two or three hundred blanks, to chime in at appropriate moments with praise of merits which for the blind collector were so eminently real that again and again (this was my salvation) his faith kindled my own.

As he spoke, his fingers caressed the despoiled portfolios. It was horrible and touching. Not for years, not since 1914, had I witnessed an expression of such unmitigated happiness on the face of a German.

This  Galician second-hand book dealer, Jacob Mendel, was the first to reveal to me in my youth the mystery of absolute concentration which characterizes the artist and the scholar, the sage and the imbecile; the first to make me acquainted with the tragical happiness and unhappiness of complete absorption.

The man is a saurian of the book world, an antediluvian survivor of an extinct species.

Apart from books, he knew nothing of the world. The phenomena of existence did not begin to become real for him until they had been set in type, arranged upon a composing stick, collected and, so to say, sterilized in a book. Nor did he read books for their meaning, to extract their spiritual or narrative substance.

For only he who lives his life as a mystery is truly alive

He did not smoke; he did not play cards; one might almost say he did not live, were it not that his eyes were alive behind his spectacles, and unceasingly fed his enigmatic brain with words, tides, names. The brain, like a fertile pasture, greedily sucked in this abundant irrigation.

In the upper world of books, where Mendel lived and breathed and had his being, there was no warfare, there were no misunderstandings, only an ever-increasing knowledge of words and figures, of book-titles and authors’ names.

I, who at least should have known that one only makes books in order to keep in touch with one’s fellows after one has ceased to breathe, and thus to defend oneself against the inexorable fate of all that lives—transitoriness and oblivion.

Chokher Bali - Rabindranath Tagore

There is in every true woman's heart, a spark of heavenly fire, which lies dormant in the broad daylight of prosperity, but which kindles up and beams and blazes in the dark hour of adversity.-Washington Irving,The Sketch Book.

An irate queen bee stings everyone that comes in her path, and similarly an irate Binodini was prepared to destroy everyone around her.

Love turns bland if not seasoned with a touch of pique, like cooking without spices..

Love needed to be rooted in life's labour, otherwise ecstasy would never be profound and enduring.

Mahendra's thoughts,
Was there a hint in this letter of an ardour - veiled yet implied, forbidden yet intimate, noxious yet delicious, offered but unrequited ?

This play acting in a down to earth domestic chore,in a sense, rescued him from the improbable task of creating his fairy tale dream world..

Mahendra addressing Binodini,
Why did you at all engage yourself  in this game ? There is now no release for you.If we sink we sink together.

Forty Rules of Love - Elif Shafak

""""""People think a soul mate is your perfect fit, and that's what everyone wants. But a true soul mate is a mirror, the person who shows you everything that is holding you back, the person who brings you to your own attention so you can change your life.

A true soul mate is probably the most important person you'll ever meet, because they tear down your walls and smack you awake. But to live with a soul mate forever? Nah. Too painful. Soul mates, they come into your life just to reveal another layer of yourself to you, and then leave.
A soul mates purpose is to shake you up, tear apart your ego a little bit, show you your obstacles and addictions, break your heart open so new light can get in, make you so desperate and out of control that you have to transform your life, then introduce you to your spiritual master...”"""""""

He and I are one..The same moon has a bright and a dark side.Shams is my unruly side.

Blow after blow,Shams managed to ruin my reputation.Because of him I learned the value of madness and have come to know the taste of loneliness, helplessness, slander, seclusion and finally heartbreak..

They just couldn't get on with out 'that' person..

Forty rules of love

Broken April - Ismail Kadare

“In no other country in the world can one see people on the road who bear the mark of death, like trees marked for felling.”

He consoled himself with the notion that perhaps it had to happen this way, and that if life outside the whirlpool of blood might perhaps be more peaceful, by the same token it would be even more dull and meaningless. He tried to call to mind families that were not involved in the blood feud, and he found no special signs of happiness in them. It even seemed to him that, sheltered from that danger, they hardly knew the value of life.
Gjorg sat numbly in a corner of the stone house. He could look forward to thirty days of safety. After that, death would lurk all around him. He would go about only in the dark like a bat, hiding from the sun, the moonlight, and the flicker of torches.
Then April would come, or rather just the first half of it. Gjorg felt an emptiness in the left side of his chest. From now on, April would be tinged with a bluish pain. . . . Yes, that was how April had always seemed to him—a month with something incomplete about it. April love, as the songs said. His own unfinished April.
'Ismail Kadare'...
Reading Kadare in English, and particularly in the United States, means reading him through a glass darkly.
The funeral took place the next day around noon. The professional mourners came from afar, clawing their faces and tearing their hair according to the custom.
“A wedding party sets out even if there is a death in the house. When the bride enters the house, the dead person leaves. Tears on one side, song on the other.”
ఈ చావుల పద్దులు లెక్క చూసే 'The Steward of the blood' పాత్రలో అతని ఆలోచనలు నాణానికి మరోవైపును చూపిస్తాయి..Kadare రచనా శైలి చాలా సరళం..
'In the depressing darkness of the room, that shred of dawn was like a message of salvation'..

“A road is for the use of men and livestock, for the passage of the living and the passage of the dead.” He smiled. Whatever he did, he could not escape its definitions. It was no use deceiving himself. The Kanun was stronger than it seemed. Its power reached everywhere, covering lands, the boundaries of fields. It made its way into the foundations of houses, into tombs, to churches, to roads, to markets, to weddings.
Perhaps it took years to get used to peace, just as it had taken so many years to get used to its absence. The mechanism of the blood feud was such that even as it freed you, it kept you bound to it in spirit for a long time.
Beyond that stretched the world whitened by the snow, a world to which nothing bound him anymore. For a long time he had felt himself a stranger in that world, absolutely superfluous, and if outside his window people sill expected anything of him, it was only in terms of the murder he was to do.
When all was said and done, the aspect of death conferred on the lives of these men something of the eternal, because its very grandeur raised them above paltry things and the petty meanness of life.“To measure one’s days by the yardstick of death, isn’t that a very special gift?
“It’s like a last authorization to go on leave in this world. The well-known saying that the living are only the dead on leave has a very real significance in our mountain country."

Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair - Pablo Neruda

ఆ మధ్య టైటిల్ చూసి 'భలే' అనుకుంటూ చదవడం మొదలు పెట్టిన 'The Success and Failure of Picasso' పూర్తి చేసేసరికి ఒక పూర్తి స్థాయి రీసెర్చ్ చేసినట్లు తలప్రాణం తోక్కొచ్చింది..

and in the skin of the grapes
I thought I touched you.

If suddenly
you forget me
do not look for me
for I shall already have forgotten you.

we begin again,
we end again
death and life.
And here we survive,
pure, with the purity that we created,
broader than the earth that could not lead us
astray
eternal as the fire that will burn
as long as life endures....

Perhaps Love and Poetry are not for me..

At first I did not see you: I did not know
that you were walking with me,
         until your roots
         pierced my chest,
joined the threads of my blood,
         spoke through my mouth,
         flourished with me

Our love was born
         outside the walls,
         in the wind,
         in the night,
         in the earth,
and that’s why the clay and the flower,
         the mud and the roots
         know your name,
         and know that my mouth
         joined yours
because we were sown together in the earth
